I was very happy to see how a Theravada bikkhu was teaching meditation (theory and practice) to school monks at Pema Tsal. There was mutual respect and the initial chanting was in the corresponding tradition: first the monks did took refuge in Tibetan and then the bikkhu in Pali and similarly when dedicating the merits.

The bikkhu, founder of the Center for Right View Meditations , developed training and programs to implement meditation daily into the life of students (monastic and non-monastic).

He structured a 20 minutes daily practice for them composed of:

  • 5min Mind-Body Coordination exercises taken from martial arts like Tai Chi (see video below for the full exercise). Breathing in an out must be coordinated with the movements and the exhalation involves bringing your lips together so to produce a wind-like sound.
  • 5min Ear Consciousness Awareness Meditation to focus on the sounds around us.
  • 5min of Vipassana Body-Scan, always equanimous, not liking or disliking the sensations, from top to bottom and bottom to top.
  • 5min of Anapanasati, observing the breath: how the air goes in an out the nostrils and the touch of the breath upon the upper lip.

I was impressed at how well presented the class was, with all types of meditations and their purposes.
