Can be seen as the wrathful version of Buddha Shakyamuni. During Buddha Shakyamuni’s times the teachings were listened to and people would listen easily, since there was peace. I will teach peacefully but I might might wrathfully later on. But this peace didn’t happen during Guru Rinpoche’s times and wrathful approach had to be taken.
The wrathful approach of pacifying and subduing is symbolized with the mudra where the middle and ring finger are curled while the rest aren’t. His eyes pupils sometimes are so spread, they are not in at the eye’s center. This shows that he does not focus only on one group of beings but all, he is equanimous and does not discriminate.
Wrathful! He might even kill in order to send the being’s mind to the Amithaba Pure Lands and do a favour to that soul!
The Dalai Lama was advised to build a big Guru Rinpoche statue at the border with China before the occupation. But he didn’t pay much attention to how to do it properly, since the requirements to do it properly are very strict. There’s a lot of constraints and demands to build such a statue. The Tibetans who built it didn’t do it very well and that justifies the fact that ceased and subdued when encountered with the Chinese power.
Buthan, Sikihim and Nepal had those statues build very well. They were not invaded.
